Plain Kate lives in a time afraid of magic.
She has a gift for carving ‘lucky’ wooden-charms. Known as Witch-Blade, her unusual gift attracts dangerous attention in a place where witches are burned. When her village falls on bad times, suspicion falls on Kate. Scared for her life, she seeks the help of a mysterious stranger.
In exchange for her shadow, the stranger will assist her. But Kate soon becomes part of a terrifying plan, darker than she could ever have dreamed.
First published in the USA as Plain Kate, this is the heartfelt story of an orphan ‘witch-child’ and her cat, caught in a time afraid of magic.
okay so now i'm really not dead! no doubt the long sordid ordeal will bore you to death (being only long, sordid and an ordeal to me). but i do have a new job. and uni has a beacon of light that heralds the end in two short months. so i'm back: less stressed and, finally, a little more read.
i feel like wood angel is the book that you pick up because of word of mouth. my very good friend debra (who is a disconcerting cookie and due to the fact that she is very much a literary genius, especially in the realm of fairytale and fables, is to be trusted completely) said 'i just finished wood angel and now i HAVE to talk to somebody about it.' so being the absolutely best friend that i am i read it.
her parting advice to me was 'ignore the cover. it doesn't do the book justice.'
as i read i realised that the cover (whilst pretty) suggested a younger audience then it is designed for. (genius thought side note: shaun tan needs to be in on this book and do an awesome remake cover. EPIC, right?!)
this book is a labour of love. and love it i did. i just... this book is so special. and unique. and utterly, heartbreakingly beautiful. and i really just want to pay it forward.
poor little orphan plain kate is just... one of those characters that you yearn for. it got to a point where i just wanted her to live (things were getting that desperate and bleak), her being loved or gaining her freedom (not in the sense you're thinking... you'll have to read it to forgive out what i'm talking about) or finding food, just kept getting moved down the list of things i wanted for plain kate.
i was so desperate for her, ya know?
and i cried.
guys, this is a book that deserves to be read. it's so special and unique and i fell in love with it so much. (meanwhile: it's a freaking DEBUT novel!).
you're going to listen to me, right? because i came back (after a FLIPPING MONTH, apologies about that) to tell you how unbearably sweet and terrible and consuming this book is. i want to desperately talk about ever moment on plain kate's journey... but spoilers are the devil spawn and you deserve to go into this and sweat it out like i had to.
read it
